BATHROOMS AND SOLAR HEATED WATER FOR RURAL ZHENGGA VILLAGE

The Tibetan Development Assistance Trust provided 194,000 RMB to fund a solar water heater and bathroom project for Zhengga Village, Xunxian Township, Hualong County, Haidong Region, Qinghai Province. The villagers contributed labor, brick, sand, cement and a total of 77,600 RMB in cash for the project. The project is presently benefitting 97 households (430 Tibetans). Each household recipient built their own bathrooms and contributed 800 RMB for each solar water heater which costs 2,800 RMB in total. In total, the local contribution may be valued at 179,450 RMB.

The project solved villagers' historic lack of access to bathing facilities, and will improve hygiene and reduce illness. In addition, the solar water heaters provide hot drinking water and warm water for washing clothes. Time spent on collecting fuel, which is the culturally-assigned task of women and girls, is also now reduced, as is the time women and girls spend in smoky kitchens boiling water.
